The Steyning Arts Society: Up The Nile With Amelia A Victorian Voyage lecture by Clive Bonham Carter

Monday 9th March - 10:00 - 12:00The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning, BN44 3XZEgyptology & Travel

Writer, artist, musician, collector, Amelia Edwards tells, and is, a remarkable story. In 1873, she travelled the length of Egypt and drew, and recorded, her impressions of all she saw; publishing A Thousand Miles up the Nile to great acclaim. From Dervish dancers in Cairo, to a midnight arrival at Abu Simbel, she carried her readers with her in engaging descriptions and evocative engravings.

Using extracts from the book and her original watercolours, as well as illustrations by her contemporaries, we will follow her on her remarkable journey.

Clive studied Egyptology at Cambridge. Has lectured to Probus, the Rotary Club, U3A, the City Literary Institute and the Guildford Institute of the University of Surrey. Has for thirty years been a teacher in secondary education. Member of the Egypt Exploration Society, being awarded an EES Scholarship to the Saqqara Expedition of 1964-5.
