New Cement Works plans now available for public scrutiny.

The South Down Project claim that "there is a unique opportunity at this moment for the local communities, the stakeholders, and anyone else who cares about what happens in the Upper Beeding Cement Works, to make their voice heard". They say that "this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to bring a world class development to our area".

Why now?
At this moment, The South Downs National Park are currently preparing their plan to submit to the Government. The Government are trying to find places to build new homes. The Local Authorities are trying to boost their economies, and the new National Planning Policy Framework promises more power for local people.

What's different about the South Down Project?
Firstly, the team behind it are not a big development company, simply interested in the site for commercial gain. They identify themselves as local people who "want the best possible solution to developing the Cement Works", and say that their plan will deliver new homes, new jobs, and further benefits to the local communities in the form of "numerous cultural and amenity gains".

Can The South Down Project really be delivered?
The project team are adamant that their plan CAN be delivered. They say they have the funders in place, they have a Concept Plan, and that they are in negotiations with The Dudman Group to buy the land, and with the South Downs National Park to decide what the planning permissions will be for the site, which has been identified by the National Park as a "Strategic Exemption".
