The Art Society Steyning: An Introduction to Art Nouveau Architecture

Monday 13th January - 10:00 - 12:00The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning BN44 3XZA look at the astonishing flowering of this highly decorative style that flourished briefly around 1900.

Art Nouveau arose, initially in Belgium and France, as a reaction against Victorian historicism and the so-called “battle of the styles”.

It was the emergence in the 19th century of iron as a building material that allowed for the creation of new forms of architecture. In a search for these new forms, architects such as Victor Horta and Hector Guimard turned to nature for their inspiration, having been influenced by Britain’s Arts and Crafts movement and the ideas of William Morris.
