Church of St Andrew & St Cuthman, Steyning: John Rutter Requiem for Good Friday

Friday 19th April - 19:30 - 20:45Brian Sawyer, Director of MusicChurch of St Andrew & St Cuthman, SteyningOn Good Friday, 19th April, at 7.30pm St Andrew and St Cuthman’s Church Choir, together with friends from the Chanctonbury Chorus, will be singing John Rutter’s ‘Requiem’ and other shorter pieces of choral music suitable for the occasion. Entry is free and there will be a retiring collection.

John Rutter’s ‘Requiem’ was first performed in its entirety on 13th October 1985 at the United Methodist Church, Dallas, Texas, conducted by the composer and dedicated to his father who had died the previous year. The Requiem achieved almost immediate success and there were over five hundred performances in the first six months after publication. This popularity has deservedly continued and it has become a firm favourite with choirs and audiences all over the world, because of its optimistic message and musical language that makes it accessible to most listeners.

The Requiem does not adhere strictly to the conventional Catholic liturgy but combines texts from the Requiem Mass and Book of Common Prayer together with settings of psalms 130 and 23. However, Rutter has some very illustrious predecessors with this approach, as can be heard in the Requiems by Fauré, Brahms and Britten.

Please do join us for this special performance on Good Friday. You would be most welcome.
