Steyning's Annual Seasonal Folk Singing: Singing at Christmas

Singing is everywhere at the moment! There's just been an excellent series on Radio 4, A Choral History of Britain, and organisations such as Voices Now inform us that currently over 2 million people now sing in some group or choir, partly due to the “Gareth Malone effect”. The physical and mental health benefits of singing are now well established. We sing for fun, sorrow, love and solidarity, and Steyning itself has more choirs and singing groups than ever before.

For many people singing is closely bound up with Christmas. We all have our favourite carols, often bound up with early memories of the festive season.

Steyning's Annual Seasonal Folk Singing will this year take place at Steyning Cricket Club on Thursday 21st December from 7.30pm.

If you haven't come in previous years expect an informal evening of Christmas carols, most from an old tradition kept alive in the pubs of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire, all with choruses and plenty of repetition.

Traditional Sussex carols will also be sung of course. The singing is led by a few afficionados, but the emphasis is on communal singing – there are words available, and no experience is necessary! Much of the singing is unaccompanied, although there are generally some musicians present to add variety to the evening. Oh, yes, and a drink tends to add to the enjoyment!

This is a free, open event for the whole community – all are welcome to join us for an evening of traditional Christmas carols - come along and enjoy the special feeling of singing together this Christmas!
