I’ve lived in the area my whole life graduating from West Sussex College of Art in 1981. After a career in design I retired to be a full time artist and now live in High Salvington.

Walking the South Downs is a constant source of joy and inspiration and I love to draw and paint in situ or gather references for making paintings in my studio.

For painting in the countryside ‘en-plein air’ I enjoy using a small box called a Pochade that neatly contains all the paints, palette, etc, with a section in the lid to hold the boards that act as an easel which can then be closed even when the paint is still wet.

Larger paintings are done back in the studio from drawings and photographs. I try to be expressive with paint, allowing happy accidents to occur which produce interesting and often surprising passages in the paintings, which resonate with experiences one discovers when walking the landscape.

I’m a relatively recent member of Steyning Arts having joined just before the lockdown started last year and have much appreciated the community of other artists. Am looking forward to being able to participate in the Art Trail and Exhibitions when these are able to resume.

I am also a member of Chalk Gallery in Lewes which has a regular cycle of new work from local artists for sale in the gallery and online at chalkgallerylewes.co.uk.
