Worthing Philharmonic Orchestra

Music in Worthing - Oboe manufacture While Worthing is well known for live music having several orchestras and choirs it is less well known as home to a world class woodwind instrument manufacturer, Howarth of London.

When our daughter needed a flute we were fortunate enough to purchase it at the Buckingham Road premises. With the main retail shop and repair workshop in London, oboe manufacturing takes place in Buckingham Road Worthing where there is also a small retail outlet for oboe and other woodwind instruments.

Today the Howarth XL oboe is the professional model played by many soloists and orchestral players around the world. The Oboe is always used to set the tuning for an orchestra by playing a concert A at the start of every performance. In the Worthing Philharmonic Orchestra, we usually have ten woodwind players including two oboists (both have Howarth instruments) and the next symphony concert will feature the Strauss Oboe Concerto in B Minor with guest soloist Andrew Knights.

There are not many Oboe concertos and the WPO concert in the Assembly Hall is an opportunity to hear this fine solo instrument in action. For details about Howarth of London and Worthing look up www.howarth.co.uk and for the WPO www.worthingphil.com (This paragraph is too late so please include Christmas Concert details above).

The next Worthing Philharmonic Concert is will be conducted by Roland Melia and in the Assembly Hall, Worthing on Sunday 27th November at 3.00pm. The full programme includes Vaughan Williams Overture 'The Wasps', the Strauss Oboe Concerto and Shostakovich Symphony no 5.

Tickets are £9,£13,£16 with children/students at only £3 and can be purchased from the box office tel 01903 206206 or on line at www.worthingtheatres.com . They can also be purchased at the door on the concert day. Barry Cranford (member of the WPO viola section)
