Winter in Steyning at the Steyning Museum

Steyning Museum has a new exhibition reminding us of the fun and hardships of Steyning winters of long ago.

The exhibition is divided into three parts.

The first, concentrating on winter football, has some real gems of quotations, such as the severe penalties enforced on the players of the Top Hat and Comic Cuts teams if they attempted to head the ball without their hats on - but that’s only a taster!

The second part,”Winter Warmth-Winter Cold,” has, among other things, the most elegant pair of pink combinations ever seen - a far cry from the felted-up, itchy horrors some may remember. Our recent snow and ice were bad, but look at the photo of skaters on Wiston pond whose skates were screwed on to their “Sunday” boots for 1d a time, and an oven on wheels supplied the inner man with hot potatoes at three for 1d.

Lastly, we have “By a Winter Fireside,” - a real trip down memory lane: an “O” gauge, 1934 Hornby train set, a Bayco house (the precursor to Lego), a gyrocopter board game and much, much more.

Don’t forget we are now open all day Saturday in addition to our usual Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings 10.30-12.30 and afternoons Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 2.30-4.00. We look forward to seeing you.

Feel the Spirit - Steyning Museum Benefit Concertn To be held on 5th March, 2011, at 2.00 pm at the Church of St.Andrew and St. Cuthman, Steyning, conducted by Zoe Peate, accompanist Laura Skuce.

The title is meant to convey a warm feeling of heralding the spring and of giving, singing and being in the Church and the music features both light classical and popular.
