Were you in Steyning at the Millennium?

We hope that you will be able to help the Museum with this picture. It is, of course, a recent one – not one of our early mysteries. So we know quite a lot about it. Many of you will recall that on a lovely hot summer’s day in the Millennium year, 2000, everyone living in Steyning at that time was invited to come to St. Cuthman’s meadow to have their photograph taken. I seem to remember the photographer, from the Steyning Herald, being perched on top of an enormous ladder orchestrating the photo shoot but we would not be surprised to discover that it was George Cockman who was the prime mover. Naturally, not everyone was able to turn up but an awful lot did - 583 to be precise.

The photograph made it to the newspaper at the time and we now have a copy. We are putting it on display from the start of October and hope that everyone who was in that photograph can come in to the Museum and identify themselves for us.

It would be great if this can be done. The Museum has loads of lists of people who’ve lived here in the past and loads of photographs - but relatively few where we can match a face to a name. I imagine that some of the people in the photograph will have moved away by now but, if they have, others amongst you will recognise them and be able to put names to the faces. Our ambition is to get at least 90% of the names recorded. Do please nip in to the Museum sometime soon to check the photograph and note down your names on the lists we are providing.

To get a nearly complete list will be a tremendous bonus for those researching their families in the years to come. We already have extensive archives going back into the past which many of our visitors delve into. To get names matched with the faces in this photograph is an opportunity to bring our archive much more up to date. As time goes by it will become more and more difficult to come up with a reliable set of names. So your help is needed now.
