WEA Steyning Branch Day Schools in the Spring

WEA Steyning is organising two exciting one day courses for March and April 2011.

The Poetry of W.B. Yeats – A day devoted to Yeats’ work, his times, influences and legacy. Tutor Janet Pressley – Saturday 12 March.

Steyning is closely associated with Yeats, as several of his later poems were written here. In the years 1937-9 he was having an intense relationship with Edith Shackleton Heald, who lived in Chantry House with her sister Nora. Yeats spent months at a time here and a room was set aside for him to write in at Chantry House – known as “the Yeats Room”.

Venue – Steyning Centre, Saxon Room. Date - Saturday 12th March 2011 10 am to 4.00 pm. Fee: £15 (includes tea and coffee. Please bring your own lunch).

A 19th Century Downland Farm – Saddlescombe – Tutor Glynn Jones – Saturday 2 April

Glynn Jones has worked for the National Trust for many years and is an experienced leader of guided walks around National Trust estates and rural properties. Saddlescombe Farm “a hidden hamlet in the downs which tells the story of downland farming from Domesday to the present day” has escaped the changes of modern farming and retains many of its original buildings from the past four centuries (including the famous donkey wheel). The afternoon will consist of a tour of the farm with tea at the Hikers’ Rest.

Please meet at Steyning Centre Fletchers Croft Car Park at 2.00 pm to share cars to Saddlescombe as parking there is limited. Date: Saturday 12 April. 2-5 pm. Course Fee £12 (not including tea). Please book in advance for this course as places are limited.Contact Sarah Leigh on Steyning 813422
