Twin Sisters 300 mile walk for charity
Two 66 year old grandmothers – identical twin sisters from the South East of England (one from Sussex, one from Kent) – are to undertake a unique long-distance walk in an attempt to raise £10,000 for research into chronic diseases.
Christine Dafter, from Matfield, Kent, and her sister Hazel Green from West Chiltington, West Sussex, are to walk approximately 300 miles following the Greenwich Meridian Line from Peacehaven, East Sussex, to Sand le Mere, on the coast, East of Hull.
It is believed that this will be the first charity walk along this newly created long-distance trekking route.
The walk starts on Sunday 1st May 2011 at Peacehaven Meridian Marker at 10.30am and finishes on Monday 30th May 2011. Money raised from the walk will go directly to the Department of Twin Research (DTR), part of King’s College London, at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London via the charity - The Chronic Disease Research Foundation. The DTR use both identical and non-identical twins to identify genetic and lifestyle influences on common illnesses and life threatening diseases. It is not only twins, but the whole population, who benefit from this research.
It is hoped that a number of twins associated with DTR research projects will join Christine and Hazel for parts of the walk.
Although living separate lives with separate interests for most of their adulthood, Christine and Hazel have always remained very close. They have also shared many coincidental experiences, much to the amusement of friends and family. For instance, a few years ago they both arrived at a party wearing identical clothes, although neither was aware of the other’s choice. More recently – and quite independently – they both arranged holidays in Dubrovnik unaware that they would be staying in the same hotel for much of the same period.
