The Black Horse, Findon

Set in the village of Findon – a quick hop in the car from Broadwater you will find yourself in one of the finest family friendly eateries in Sussex.

Finding a pub that is both welcoming to families and that serves truly good food can be like finding a needle in a haystack. So often those catering for children serve average fayre and those that offer fine dining can be too stuffy to take a, lets say vocal, toddler to. So I was delighted when I took my family along last week and each of us from 18 months to, well older than I care to mention had a fabulous time.

The restaurant was all decked out and ready for Christmas, apparently each year they throw a party for the local children and the day before they had been descended on by 75 children and their families. The children had all helped with the Christmas decorations and the tree was aching under the weight of baubles.

The dining room has a welcoming feel with eclectic wooden furniture and a contemporary décor. As we visited on a Sunday it was too much of a temptation to pass up on the Sunday Roast; the smell of Sage and the portion sizes I had eyed on my way in had me sold as soon as we came through the door.  My husband Joe, had the Lamb and, as a vegetarian, I was thrilled to have the option of Nut Roast and when it arrived we weren’t disappointed. A mountain of beautifully cooked vegetables, an enormous Yorkshire pudding and the most delicious gravy with a bit of a kick; Joe’s lamb was tender and the nut roast was one of the best I’ve tasted in a long time, moist but with plenty to get your teeth into.

The children were made really welcome; each of them were given a little activity book with crayons and Christmas goodies which went down very well, as did the food. They both enjoyed the battered chicken with skinny chips, in fact my seven year old said that “the chicken was especially good”

For the great price of £12 for adults and £7 for children we also enjoyed a dessert and the girl’s drinks were free.

The Black horse is part of a small thriving chain of gastro-pubs called Mountain Range and even in a time of economic doom these guys are a real success story. And how? They work hard to give you new reasons to visit... Live Music, Pamper nights and a Skittle Alley function room that is always busy. Things are going so well that Neil told us that they have plans to open another three in the next 12 months. On thing is certain if we stumble across another Mountain Range Pub we will definitely we stepping inside.
