Steyning Scouting for Boys – and Girls
Following an action-packed summer term of activities, the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in Second Steyning Scout Group, along with their parents, leaders and helpers are enjoying a well-earned summer break.
The Beavers, just 6 to 8 years old, were very enthusiastic about their visits to Steyning Cricket Club and the Museum, and enjoyed a number of evenings at Hillside Campsite, learning how to put up tents and follow a trail in the woods, plus playing lots of ‘wide’ games in the field finishing off with a barbeque or picnic tea, and a campfire sing-song.
Three Beavers achieved their Chief Scout’s Bronze Awards, the highest achievement for a Beaver, before moving up to Cubs next term.
The Cubs, 8 to 10 years old, and Scouts, 10 to 14 years old, likewise have had a busy summer term, with overnight stays at HillsideCubs also attended the District Cub Camp at Parkwood, where they experienced underground caving and tried their hand at rope-making amongst other things, with a grand finale of a mammoth water fight – to wash off all that dirt - at the end of the weekend.
The Scouts went to an Adur District Scout Camp at Broadstone Warren near East Grinstead. They too slithered around in the mud – this time in an underground labyrinth of sunk tubes of different diameters. They had a go at grass sledding down an Astroturf slide, honed their archery skills and much more besides.
Looking forward to next term, which begins mid-September, the Beavers’ meetings will be packed with team games, craft work and experiments working for Activity and Challenge badges as well as the excitement of letting off steam with ‘Jump the rope’, or ‘Pirates and sharks’
The Cubs will be aiming to achieve their camping badge in September; they will have to work together as a teto put up their own 6-man tents, always leaving them neat and tidy(!), prepare and help cook their own meals – and do all the washing up!!
Of course, none of this would be possible without a dedicated team of volunteers, and the Second Steyning Scout Group is in desperate need of more leaders or helpers to lighten the load, bring in fresh ideas, enable them to take the youngsters on more outings and also to help grow the group.
Far too few are doing too much – so please contact Paul and find out how easy it is to get involved! It won’t take over your life (unless you want it to) but it is very rewarding and great fun. Most leaders are parents and do it for 3 years. You do not have to swing across gorges, catch your own meals or live life on the edge, you just need to enjoy seeing children enjoying themselves and set the standards for them to work towards.
For more information on being a helper or to add a name to the waiting list, please telephone Paul Johnson on 01903 815807.
