Steyning Scouting For Boys and Girls.

The Beavers, just 6 to 8 years old, were very enthusiastic about their visit in June to Steyning Cricket Club and also enjoyed a number of evenings at Hillside Campsite learning how to follow a trail in the woods, plus playing games in the field. We also had an evening walk from Memorial Playing Field up to and around the rifle range returning along Mouse Lane. Four Beavers achieved their Chief Scout’s Bronze Awards, the highest achievement for a Beaver, before moving up to Cubs in September.

The Cubs, 8 to 10 years old, and Scouts, 10 to 14 years old, likewise have had a busy summer term, one of the highlights being a Group overnight camp at Hillside Campsite.

Twenty eight Scouts went to an Adventure Camp in Kent, where 50 activities were on offer but only half were possible in the 5 days they were there. Needless to say they can’t wait until next year to try the ones they missed this year. It is already booked but they will need to raise funds before it is confirmed.

The group is pleased to have been allocated a small allotment on some temporarily spare land at Rublees Allotments where Scouts will try to grow some vegetables for their next camp!

Twelve Beavers, 8 Cubs and 21 Scouts spent one night at Hillside for a Group Camp. The Scouts cooked a BBQ supper for all, including those parents who attended our AGM in the main hall. After parents left the whole group played various ‘wide games’ before gathering around the camp fire to sing songs and make fun. They all enjoyed the evening and all the sections joined in until we trekked back across the field in the dark for a hot drink before bed. Just as lights went out the heavens opened – we were lucky to have enjoyed another magical evening around the Hillside campfire.

The AGM went well and we are pleased to have an Exec Comm. Chairman again – the previous one had to leave because his job moved away from Steyning.

Looking forward to next term, which begins soon in mid-September, the Beavers’ meetings will be packed with team games, craft work and experiments working for Activity and Challenge badges as well as the excitement of letting off steam with ‘Jump the rope’, or ‘Pirates and sharks’.

The Cubs will be aiming to achieve their camping badge in September; they will have to work together as a team to put up their own 6-man tents, always leaving them neat and tidy(!), prepare and help cook their own meals - and do all the washing up!!

The 2nd Steyning Scout Group is in desperate need of more leaders or helpers to lighten the load, bring in fresh ideas, and enable them to take the youngsters on more outings and also to help grow the group. We do have a waiting list but for Parents getting involved by willing to become leaders your children will join as soon as they are old enough.

For more information on being a helper or to add a name to the waiting list, please telephone Paul Johnson on 01903 815807.
