Steyning Memorial Garden Refurbishment Project

The refurbishment project really got under way on Monday the 11th of July.

The ground works, which are being carried out by Barry Walters of Groundstone Services, are expected to take the remainder of July and into August.

The first stage of the planting, which will be carried out by Alex Bell (the Garden Designer) will be put in place on completion of the ground works. The second and final stage of the planting will be completed in the Autumn when some 900 spring bulbs will be introduced into the garden.

Alex has recently been awarded a silver gilt prize at Malvern and more recently was awarded a silver prize at Hampton Court.

The memorial Plaque has been removed for safekeeping during the refurbishment and is being looked after by Lewis Whittaker, Chairman, RBL Steyning and District Branch.

Mr. Whittaker said that he thought this was a very exciting time and that the final result would be a garden which any community would be proud to have in their area.

It is intended to hold a rededication/ reopening celebration at 15.30 on Wednesday the 28th of September when a short service will be conducted by the Rev. Canon Dr.Paul Rampton. Details of this ceremony will be published later.

Mr. Harry Goring, whose family have owned the Wiston Estate since 1743, has kindly consented to formally reopen the Memorial Garden.

There has been an incredible response to the appeal for finances to enable the go ahead for this project, including Viridor Credits Environmental, the Wilson Memorial trust together with donations from local businesses, organisations and from many individuals.
