Steyning Memorial Garden Refurbishment Project

There has been quite a lot of discussion about War Memorials in Steyning recently and the decision not to have a third memorial was taken together with the decision to arrange for signposting to the Memorial Garden to be installed, my thanks to the Steyning Parish Council for this.

The idea of improving the existing Memorial garden arose and consequently the Steyning and District Branch of the Royal British Legion have inaugurated a project for the complete refurbishment of the Memorial Garden in Steyning, this was given further impetus following the short memorial service on the 11th of November when the garden and the immediate surrounding area resembled the Somme rather than West Sussex!

Formal support for this project has now been given by the Steyning Parish Council, the Royal Air Force Association and the Steyning Society together with the Steyning and District branch of the RBL. In addition, a local prize winning garden designer, Alex Bell, has volunteered to coordinate any quotations we receive. The assistance of Alex is already much appreciated.

Obviously, financial backing will have to be sought and some matching local finance will be required. It is intended to approach local businesses and community groups, each of which will be contacted in the near future and also individuals for this portion of the funds, to this end a specific bank account has been opened.

I have already received many favourable comments regarding this project as it is seen as something which will benefit the community at large. Contributions have already been received from local residents for which we are extremely grateful and these have been placed into the special account for the Memorial garden.
