Steyning In Bloom

Summer 2011 ... The streets of Steyning are filled with hanging baskets, flowering tubs, and floral decorations outside shops and houses. Gardens throughout the area brim over with flowers and the town looks beautiful.

Steyning in Bloom raises money to fund the plants, the planting and the watering of most of the displays. (They also organise regular cleaning and weeding blitzes of the streets … and would welcome additional volunteers!)

Each year as part of our fundraising there is a tour of local gardens and a cream tea kindly sponsored by Springwells Hotel - this year we visited some of the gardens tucked away behind the High Street, beautiful private places - where enthusiastic gardeners have created green and flower filled areas of magic.

We also present awards for Front Gardens of Distinction, and for ones that have been Highly Commended - a display in the High Street shows the names and photos of some that have been chosen this year.

The gardens with awards for Distinction are:
• 54 Penlands Vale - Fay and Roger Hersey. A well designed garden, full of interesting planting and rich and subtle colouring.
• Mill Stream Cottage, Sir Georges Place - Robert Allison grows a wonderful succesion of container plants and bulbs from early Spring through to Autumn
• 24 Saxon Road - Val Stringer A well established garden - a rich mix of clever planting and flower filled containers Amongst a large number of very beautiful gardens, a number were selected as highly commended ......

Highly Commended Front Gardens:
3 Breach Close, 30 Laines Road, 38 Ingram Road, 14 Rosemary Avenue,
3 Greenacres, 24 Penlands Vale, 85 High Street, The Stone House,
No 5 Church St, Court Cottage - Church Street, Penfold Hall, Downsview - Goring Road, Fairlawn, Goring Road.

Highly Commended Displays in Adjoining Front Gardens:
• 15/17 Penlands Way
• 5/7 Middle Mead
Two gardeners were singled out not only for their magnificent displays, but also for their efforts in the surrounding neigh bourhood. Jenny Churchill, 90 High St. has planted a bed in the car park behind the high street, and Geoff Bird of 2 Kew Cottages has transformed the twitten beside Kew Cottages with plants that produce a good show throughout the year.

Highly Commended Gardens and Contribution to the Surrounding Neighbourhood:
• 2 Kew Cottages
• 90 High Street

Steyning in Bloom is organising a Gardeners Question Time evening on Wednesday October 5th at the Cricket Club. The event is in aid of Steyning In Bloom, the community strand of the Chamber of Trade that is responsible for the lamppost baskets and some of the tubs of flowers in the High Street and the car parks.

It will be a Gardeners’ Question Time with four local experts who will answer questions put by the audience. Tickets are £5, available from The Steyning Bookshop along with forms for people who have a question to put.
