Steyning goes to the Olympics.
The people of Steyning are taking up enthusiastically a once in a lifetime opportunity to view the London Olympic sites as they near completion for the 2012 Games. The Steyning Millennium Trust is organising a series of tours accompanied by a Blue Badge guide. They provide the complete story behind the tremendous scale of the developments, which are transforming one of the most neglected areas of London into a series of world-class venues.
Charles Ashby, who is a Trustee of The Millennium Trust and organiser of the tours, said, ‘This is a unique opportunity to see history in the making. After the London Games of 1908 and 1948 we didn’t expected to see the event in London for a third time and I think it is the first city ever to have this privilege. I am sure it will be many generations before it is repeated’.
Caroline Meeson, who was on the first trip said, ‘It is an amazing day out filled with interesting and jaw dropping sights and information. We visited the Olympic Park and other Olympic venues including a trip around the East End, the Royal Docks and finishing at the Woolwich Barracks and Arsenal. The day was extremely well organised, including lunch at an East End pub, and left one feeling very proud of all that has already been achieved and looking forward to 2012.’
The Millennium Trust is a registered Charity dedicated to inspiring the students of Steyning Grammar School. Traditionally awards are given to the highest academic achievers but the approach of the Millennium Trustees is completely different.
They believe all students, no matter their academic ability, have a gift or skill and they want to encourage them to make the most of their lives. Awards of £250 are made each year to at least ten Students who achieved above expectation. They go to all age groups and abilities, including the disabled. The money is spent on equipment or services that help improve the student’s skills or further education. The Trust, whose strap line is: “Every student – the best they can be”, has an ongoing need to raise money.
Every tour helps raise funds for The Millennium Trust. Charles Ashby, telephone number 01903 814049, will be delighted to hear from anyone wishing to join one of their excellent days out.
