Steyning Centre gets its own defibrillator
Steyning Centre users can feel even safer now it has its own defibrillator. This has been sponsored by SAFeR Steyning, the area’s first responder scheme, and funded by the Rotary Club of Steyning & Henfield. The equipment will be formally presented to Steyning Parish Council chair Sue Rogers by Michael Trist, deputy chair of the Rotary Club and Martin Leigh–Pollitt, chair of SAFeR Steyning at 11am on Monday 26 July.
Each public access defibrillator costs around £1,200 and the Centre’s unit is fixed on the wall in an alarmed cabinet (to prevent tampering) near the main entrance. It can be used by anyone identifying a need for immediate and emergency care. People do not have to be qualified in first aid as easy-to-understand verbal prompts guide the user through the process, however the centre’s two caretakers have been fully trained by the South East Coast Ambulance Service responder unit and Hazel Roxby, the parish council’s deputy clerk is already a member of the SAFeR team.
Martin Leigh-Pollitt comments: “We’re delighted to be able to add this life-saving piece of equipment in a venue which is in use by so many members of the public, and know that it will give peace of mind to many. Without the funding of the Rotary Club, which has provided crucial support since the start of the SAFeR scheme, this would not have been possible. We’re grateful for their encouragement and financial assistance.
And here’s advance notice for everyone in the area – if you’d like to support SAFeR Steyning and have a fantastic evening too, put Saturday 2nd October in your diaries, as it’s this year’s SAFeR Day and we’ll be putting on another of our successful social events, “Steyning’s Big Magical Night Out” at the Steyning Grammar School theatre. Last year’s SAFeR Day raised around £1,000 and we’re hoping to top that this year.
