Steyning 10:10

The Steyning 10:10 campaign has been started by a group of local people whose aim is to get the whole community thinking about what we can do to help tackle climate change by reducing our carbon footprint – and taking action so that together we can make a real difference in achieving the target of reducing our carbon emissions by 10% in 2010.

Greening Campaign
The Steyning 10:10 team plans to take the hugely successful Greening Campaign started in Petersfield and to introduce it to Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding. The Greening Campaign aims to be an effective local community response to a global problem.  It aims to encourage and support local people and businesses to take easy straightforward steps to reduce energy consumption and waste – and in so doing to make financial savings while benefiting the environment. It is designed to be simple, fun and inclusive so all members of the community feel they have influence through small, inexpensive actions.

To date, the Greening Campaign has spread to 100 towns and villages across the South East and beyond, where it has been welcomed enthusiastically, and has already begun to make measurable differences. The Greening Campaign is supported by West Sussex County Council and Horsham District Council and is already being run locally in Henfield and Horsham.

We believe this is an important campaign that could benefit us all – individuals, families, organisations, businesses and the community as a whole.

The Greening Campaign is run in four phases:
Phase 1 – A very simple challenge card which people complete and display in their window.  This allows everyone to take part and engages the community behind the campaign.
Phase 2 – A more detailed look at the activities of the community and a more structured and planned approach to tackling climate change.
Phase 3 – A look at the effects of climate change and how our community will need to adapt to keep itself safe and functional.
Phase 4 – A new start to becoming a more sustainable community.

Public meeting: 7.30pm on Tuesday 27th April at St Andrew’s Primary School hall
To kick off phase 1 of the Greening Steyning campaign, the Steyning 10:10 team are holding a public meeting where the campaign will be explained in detail. This meeting is for representatives from local community groups, clubs and societies, schools, businesses and churches and is also open to everyone who lives or works in the town.

Those attending the meeting will be invited to help choose a number of simple actions they consider to be most relevant to our community and which will enable people to make a difference to our environment today – and long into the future. This will result in a list of 8 simple challenges each household in Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding could commit to in order to reduce their carbon emissions.

The campaign group will then organise a public launch event for the Greening Steyning campaign inviting everyone in the community to contribute. This event is likely to be held in October 2010.

Each household will be given a card with a Greening Steyning logo on and the list of 8 simple challenges for members of their household to commit to, for example, turn off all standbys, wash laundry at 30%C and walk if the journey is less than one mile. When 5 things have been done, the householder can place the ‘logo card’ in the front window of their home. The campaign group will then count the cards after an agreed number of weeks, calculate the amount of CO2 jointly saved and celebrate the achievement!

After this we should be ready to move onto phase 2 of the campaign - more about this later...
