Local Couple in Oxfam Trailwalker 100km Challenge

David and Liz Chesters, who live in Steyning, have formed a team called the St Cuthman Challengers to take part in the Oxfam Trailwalker 100km Challenge, July 16/17th 2011. They - together with friend George Greene and David’s son, Sven - aim to complete the South Downs walk in less than 30 hours, some of it overnight.
The event is run jointly by Oxfam and the Gurkha Welfare Trust and they hope to raise £1500, to be divided equally between the two charities.
The Steyning couple, who are now semi-retired, have been part of the local Oxfam supporters’ group for many years and this is not their first challenge: between them they have completed 11 marathons and are set to do the Brighton race again, next month. In their spare time they also enjoy writing short stories, travelling, films and theatre.
Their website provides a strong link to St Cuthman and his own walking challenge, pushing his mother in a wheelbarrow, and the team hope that local people will want to support them, either through turning out to cheer them on or by making a donation to the charities.
Most people will be aware of Oxfam and the work it does, but may not be so familiar with the Gurkha Welfare Trust. This organisation relieves poverty and distress among Gurkha ex-servicement and their dependents. Money raised for Trailwalker 2011 will help to provide clean drinking water and sanitation in 80 Gurkha villages.
