How to make an Easter Bonnet

easter_bonnetEaster bonnets are a staple event in the Easter calendar! If you’re facing the challenge and want to create something special for your child, we have all the creative inspiration you need to create a bonnet with that extra wow factor.

Bonnets can be made from a variety of materials - from basic straw and boater-style hats to home-made card creations that you can muster up with your child. The latter probably allows for more creativity but if you’re pushed for time and have a ready-made hat at hand, it’ll give you a prominent head start!

Bonnet ideas
Chicks
Buy some cheap ready-made chicks from your local craft or pound shop and use PVA glue to stick them to the brim of the hat. Tie a yellow ribbon around the base and finish off with some home-made tissue paper flowers. Classic and simple!

Flowers
Scour the shops for some cheap imitation flowers or pick some wild flowers from your garden. Once you have a good collection you can start attaching them to your bonnet. A ribbon tied around the middle will finish it off and help to hold any un-ruly flowers in place.

Easter on a plate
Fill a paper or plastic plate with Easter-esque bits n pieces - small chicks, chocolate eggs, bunnies, flowers - the more the merrier! Once you’ve finished the decorating, place two small holes in the end of the plate and thread ribbon through to tie underneath your child’s chin.

Easter cone
Give your child some card and let them decorate it with markers, card cut-outs,  streamers, ribbons, tissue paper flowers, glitter etc. After this, fold the paper into the shape of a cone, using tape to secure the edges. Once the bonnet is finished, make a couple of holes in the end, thread some ribbon through and tie it under your child’s chin.

Rabbit bonnet
Make some large cut out bunny ears and cover them in grey felt or fabric. Make the inner section of the ear using pink felt and stick that on top. Once your ears are ready, stick them to the bonnet and cover with chicks and mini eggs. Alternatively just stick them to a headband for a quick and easy little Easter bunny!

Farmyard hat
Make a card hat (or use a straw hat) and cover it with fluffy cotton wool so the hat looks like a big sheep. You can use stick on goggly eyes made from black card and add some fluffy chicks around the brim of the hat. If you want to add some eggs into the mix, try chocolate mini eggs or make your own home-made paper mache version.

Spring bonnet
Gather a collection of Spring-inspired items to stick on your hat (think bees, flowers, sunshine, nests, birds) and start gluing. Once your hat is covered add a yellow ribbon and a couple of sunflowers to the top for added impact.

We would love to see some of your creations! Why not take a picture and send it into us at Your Steyning... You never know we may print them in next months issue...
