How green are Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding? The results are out!

Unless you’ve been living underground for the last 6 months you should have heard about the excellent Greening Campaign in Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding! The Greening Campaign is fantastic initiative to encourage us to take simple actions together as a community to reduce our environmental impact and make a really positive difference. A big thank you to everyone who got involved in 2010! Here’s an update on our brilliant progress so far and what we’re planning next. Please read on and get involved!

Progress so far:
The Greening Campaign team organised a very successful launch event on 23rd October at the Steyning Centre. If you came along you will have seen first hand what an interesting, fun, worthwhile event it was and hopefully been impressed at how the whole community got together and got involved!

In early November, challenge cards were delivered to every household in Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding. The card listed 9 simple challenges which members households could to commit to. When your household had completed 5 things you were asked to place the ‘logo card’ in the front window of your home.

The Greening Campaign team walked tirelessly around the cold, icy streets of Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding during December counting the challenge cards displayed in the windows of local homes.

A big thank you to all of you who put up challenge cards in your windows. The results of the count are now in! A total of 305 cards were spotted; 7.6% of the 4029 households counted in Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding. This is a very creditable result for a community our size, and compares well with other towns that have run Greening Campaigns, so well done!

Congratulations to the residents of Bramber as you displayed cards in an impressive 17.6% of homes, taking the green crown for the highest coverage! Residents of streets showing a particularly high percentage of cards, and who should give themselves a pat on the back, are: the Ridings, Maudlyn Park, Maudlyn Parkway, Penns Court, Museum Cottages and Steyning High Street. The full results can be seen at: www.steyning1010.org and make interesting reading.

Next step – phase 2
The Greening Campaign is run in four phases. Phase 1 was all about raising general awareness of climate change, and getting as many groups as possible involved. With your help, we’ve done a great job on this and now have a very good base to build on.

Phase 2 is about choosing some specific ‘projects’ to take on as a community – and we’d like your help in doing this. The Greening Steyning team held an open meeting on 26th January to canvas views and discuss a range of ideas for projects we can choose to focus on in 2011. We welcome your ideas so please get in touch with us on the email address below if you have any good ideas.

Thank you!
A huge thank you to all of you who’ve given your support to the Steyning 10:10 and Greening Campaign over the past year!   It’s been a fantastic team effort – and a lot of fun along the way.  With the whole community being positive and acting together we have shown we really can achieve a lot! A special thank you to our Steyning 10:10 Greening Campaign co-ordinator Geoff Barnard, and his team, who put lots of time, energy and enthusiasm into the campaign to make it a success!

If you managed to meet the 10:10 goal of cutting your emissions by 10% in 2010, bravo! But don’t stop there – keep going! If you’re just starting out on this, why not make 2011 the year when you get a grip on your carbon emissions.

Wishing you a great green 2011!
