Have you experienced postnatal distress?

Many women will already have heard about, or experienced postnatal depression.

Midwives and health visitors ask us about it and numerous websites have information about symptoms and treatment. However, recent research shows that psychological problems after having a baby encompass much more than depression and may include other types of psychological and emotional difficulties such as anxiety, stress, difficulties bonding and difficulties adjusting to parenthood.

At the University of Sussex, we are trying to find out more about women’s experiences of all types of postnatal distress. We would like to interview approximately 20 women who have a baby up to one year old and who feel they either did experience or are experiencing any kind of postnatal distress. The interview will last approximately 45 minutes to an hour. All information is completely confidential and anonymous. I will arrange to meet you somewhere that is convenient for you (for example your home). Any travel expenses will be refunded.

This research is important as we believe that all women who experience emotional difficulties after birth should be able to access help, rather than limiting help to those experiencing depression.  This research will be used to raise awareness of the range of different problems that occur, and to inform screening and treatment offered for postnatal distress.

If you would like to be involved, please either email me at:
R.Meades@Sussex.ac.uk or call me on 01903 879437 or 07974 717951.
I would love to hear from you!
