Have a go at bellringing in Steyning

One of the most enduring sounds of England both in the countryside and in the town is the ringing of church bells.  This is not just a sound of Sundays but of any night of the week, and sometimes even during the day.

Have you ever wondered who is doing the ringing?  Well it could be almost anyone - and it could be you after only a short period of tuition.  The great thing is that bellringing must be one of the few activities open to virtually anyone, and it’s free!

What does “virtually anyone” mean?  Well contrary to popular belief you don’t have to be strong, musical or a churchgoer (but you are not excluded if you have some or all of those qualities!).  The bellringers at Steyning at present consist of men and women ranging from 16 years old to over 70. The age you can start ringing is usually dependent on height, and people learn right through to their 70s.

So why learn to ring?  It’s a great way of making new friends from all walks of life, there are opportunities to visit other towns & villages on outings & holidays, and join local bellringing groups and societies. In addition, it is a traditional skill dating back to the sixteenth century, and there is even a weekly magazine which has been in publication for nearly 100 years. And of course, you have a chance to make a glorious musical sound!

We would like to increase the membership of our band of ringers, so if you are interested in seeing what bellringing is about why don’t you come along to St Andrew & St Cuthman’s Church any Thursday night sometime between about 8pm and 9.15pm. You can be sure of a warm welcome, and there would be no obligation!  And we even go to the pub afterwards ....
