Greening Steyning Launch

Greening Steyning LaunchEveryone in the local community is invited!
As our awareness of environmental issues grows many us feel we want to do something positive to reduce our environmental impact but it’s hard to know where to start. The good news is there are simple actions we can take together as a community to make a really positive difference. Here’s how…

The Greening Campaign:
A group of local people have joined together to take the hugely successful Greening Campaign started in Petersfield and to introduce it to Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding. The Greening Campaign aims to be an effective local community response to a global problem.  It aims to encourage and support local people and businesses to take easy straightforward steps to reduce energy consumption and waste – and in so doing to make financial savings while benefiting the environment. It is designed to be simple, fun and inclusive so all members of the community feel they have influence through small, inexpensive actions.

We believe this is an important campaign that could benefit us all – individuals, families, organisations, businesses and the local community as a whole.

The Greening Campaign is run in four phases, the first of which involves a very simple challenge card which people complete and display in their window.

Greening Steyning public meeting:
The Steyning 10:10 team held a public meeting on 27th April to start phase 1 of the Greening Steyning campaign. Representatives from local community groups, clubs and societies, schools, businesses and churches met to help choose a number of simple actions they consider to be most relevant to our community and which will enable people to make a difference to our environment today – and long into the future. This resulted in a list of 9 simple challenges each household in Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding could commit to in order to reduce their environmental impact.

Greening Steyning launch event:
The campaign group have now organised a public launch event on 23rd October for the Greening Steyning campaign inviting everyone in the community to contribute.

The event will be an exciting, interactive and informative morning explaining how the first phase of the Greening Steyning campaign will work. Several community groups will be involved in interesting stalls highlighting the 9 green challenges we can all try to achieve. There will also be a double decker bus parked outside the Steyning Centre with information on improvements to local bus services.

It should prove to be a really fascinating, fun and worthwhile event but we need you to come along to make it a real success! So, please join us between 10am and 12noon at the Steyning Centre on Saturday 23rd October!

Next steps:
In early November, each household will be given a challenge card with a Greening Steyning logo on and the list of 9 challenges for members of their household to commit to. For example, turn off all standbys, wash laundry at 30%C and walk or cycle if the journey is less than one mile. When you’ve completed 5 things you can place the ‘logo card’ in the front window of your home. The campaign group will then count the cards after an agreed number of weeks, calculate the amount of CO2 jointly saved and celebrate the achievement!

We hope to be able to report back on the results of our achievements in the new year. After this we should be ready to move onto phase 2 of the campaign - more about this later…
