Why is transport such an issue?
Transport is a big environmental issue as the carbon dioxide emitted from personal travel makes up almost a quarter of UK’s carbon emissions. Vehicle exhaust emissions are a major source of air pollution in some areas, particularly around busy road corridors. Pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, benzene, and particulate matter. Transport is a major health issue as vehicle emissions affect people’s health, increasing risks of asthma and respiratory diseases. Greener travel options such as walking and cycling can improve fitness and health. Transport is also a big financial issue with the costs of car parking, and petrol and diesel, escalating rapidly.
Two wheels are better than four and two legs are pretty good too!
If you take car to get to the local shops, school or work, why not walk or take a bike sometimes? Cycling and walking cut your carbon footprint significantly as you are not burning fossil fuel to get anywhere - just calories! They are also also free! Cycling can be a very pleasant and healthy way of travelling both locally and further afield. I certainly enjoy my bike journeys from home in Steyning to work in Worthing! Take a look at the guide to cycling in and around Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding displayed during Green Transport Month to find out the best local routes to enhance your cycling experience.
