Go Ahead For The Steyning Memorial Garden Refurbishment Project

The green light has been given for the Memorial Garden refurbishment project to go ahead in a few weeks time now that confirmation has been received that the project has been registered with the Entrust Organisation (A government requirement).

The bulk of the funding has been awarded by Viridor Credits Environmental Company, through the Landfill Communities Fund, who have donated the magnificent sum of £15,000, the Wilson Memorial Trust, who have donated a wonderful £2,500 and thanks to local businesses, organisations and residents a further sum just in excess of £2,500 has been raised.

The only expense so far has been £1530, this is to satisfy a requirement for a third party contribution of ten per cent of the amount granted by Viridor Credits Environmental Company.

Although sufficient funding has been raised for the initial groundworks and the planting, orders for which will be placed in the next week or two, there is still a requirement to finance the “finishing touches”. Further contributions would be very much appreciated.

It is worth noting that our prize winning garden designer, Alex Bell, whose design for the new layout of the Memorial Garden has received unanimous praise from those who have seen the plans and who has given his design services without charge, has just been awarded a silver gilt prize at the Malvern Spring Show. He is also designing a garden for the Hampton Court flower show.

The groundworks contract will be awarded to Goldstone Services (GB)Ltd, the planting contract will be awarded to Alex Bell Garden Design, the Poppy Mosaic will be made by Claire Potter design of Old Portslade Village and Tree Surgeon Nick Eddison of Steyning has offered his services free of charge.

All in all, this is an incredible response to a project which has obviously caught the imagination of the public at large.
