Fresh Brains......
Buying a new PC or laptop can be a stressful business. There are gigabytes of this and gigahertz of that and more exotic and bewildering concoctions than your local takeaway could dream up in a year.
The clear advice you need to make the right buying choice isn’t always forthcoming if you venture into a big-name computer store, so here are a couple of tips to help you be better equipped when the time comes to invest in a shiny new computer.
Beware of ‘Loadsa-storage’
Big hard drives are great. So is a lot of system memory (or RAM). They have another thing in common though – they are among the cheapest components in your new machine. Manufacturers will often dazzle you with quantity in these areas to mask shortcomings in more fundamental (and expensive) parts.
Brains are where it’s at...
The key element of your new PC which will dictate its performance and its longevity more than any other is the processor – its brain. Extra memory and larger hard drives are easy, straightforward upgrades a few years down the line, but, particularly in laptops, you may well be stuck with the processor you get at the outset for the lifetime of the machine. So this above all is where your budget should be focused. There are a huge array of options, but the majority of people looking to perform routine tasks (email, internet, watch the odd movie, knock up a spreadsheet or letter, or catch up on the Archers or Eastenders) will find plenty under the bonnet just a rung or two up the ladder from the bargain basement. Avoid budget processors like Intel Celeron and AMD Sempron if you can – they can be a false economy leading you to need another upgrade far sooner than you’d have liked.
Lots of other options can muddy the waters still further, from graphics to Bluetooth to screen resolution....
So if you need help navigating your way through the buying minefield and want sensible advice tailored to your needs at home or in your business, pop your head round the door of our workshop on the High Street.
We sometimes even have biscuits in.....
