Do you know what’s growing on the Downs?
Common spotted orchid, eyebright, birds foot trefoil…do these ring any bells for you? The Steyning Downland Scheme is looking for people to join its successful Botany Surveying group, identifying all the wonderful variety of plants on our precious chalk grassland.
The most important thing to bring is an enthusiasm for the detail growing on our Downs. You don’t have to be an expert, but some knowledge of plants is useful – WSCC Rangers provide our expert support.
We spend a morning a month together, between May and September, out on the downs with books and magnifying lenses learning from each other and the nature around us. Have a look on our website (www.steyningdownland.org) at the ‘Getting Close’ article to get a feel for what we do. More volunteers are needed so we can survey the whole area.
There will be a training evening on May 19th to find out more. Please do make contact if you have any questions, and to let us know if you would like to come along.
If you are interested in surveying any other fauna on the Downs, we would also love to hear from you.
