Britons Croft Update, Steyning

Britons Croft, a housing scheme for older people who need care and support with daily living, is to close.

The decision to close the scheme was made because its facilities are extremely outdated. The accommodation it offers does not meet the standard that Saxon Weald wants to provide for its residents.

People at Britons Croft live in bed sits and, while they have a separate washbasin and toilet, have to share bathrooms. Many areas are not wheelchair accessible.

Saxon Weald has given careful consideration of the costs and benefit to residents of refurbishing the existing property, but it would be too expensive and impractical to bring it up to modern standards.

The building will be demolished. No decision has yet been made about the future of the site.

Residents are now in the process of choosing suitable new homes in the area.

Saxon Weald’s member of staff dedicated to helping older people to move home is liaising with residents, their close family or friends, to discuss their needs and prepare for the move. She will provide help with the packing and moving, disconnecting and reconnecting utilities, redirection of post and give any additional support that people need.

Saxon Weald will make every household at Britons Croft a home-loss payment of £4,700 in compensation for the disturbance the move will cause. The housing association will also remove and refit carpets and curtains, or meet the reasonable costs of replacing them if they cannot be reused.
