Brighton to Barcelona 2010
Between Wednesday 15th and Saturday 25th September 2010 local resident Mark Taylor and 11 others will be cycling from Brighton to Barcelona to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice in Worthing. They will be cycling between 70 and 100 miles per day and the total distance covered will be over 800 miles. The route will take them from Brighton via Portsmouth, St Malo, East of Nantes, Bordeaux, over the Pyrenees into Spain and onto Barcelona. We will arrive in Barcelona at the Christopher Columbus monument on the 25th September.
None of the group who are taking this challenge is a long distance cyclist; they are simply a group of friends who want to do something worthwhile to try to make a difference. The group have been training in the gym, on spinning bikes and out on the road (the great British weather permitting) since August last year and are now cycling on average 125 miles per week.
They have set up a website through which they can keep people updated on how our training and planning is going; www.brightontobarcelona.co.uk
Why?
Each rider has their own reason for participating. 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of Mark’s step father passing away at St Barnabas after a brave fight against cancer. The challenge is a fitting way to mark his passing and raise funds for the people who cared for him so well in his final days. In 2008 the group cycled from Brighton to Berlin and raised £15,000 for a cancer charity, this time they want it to be as, if not more, successful.
They have all worked extremely hard to make this event happen and to make it as successful as possible. The group are aware of the enormity of the challenge they are facing. As it approaches they are apprehensive and excited in equal measure but most importantly are focused on what they want to achieve and envisage it being a fantastic experience for them all.
