New Art Shop and Gallery Opening in Steyning High Street, West Sussex

Art House 50 opened its doors on Saturday May 7th. A splendour of handmade delights are on display and for sale; Bloomsbury inspired hand painted furniture, vintage items, handmade jewellery, accessories, soft furnishings, pottery, greetings cards and more.

The Bloomsbury inspired furniture includes cupboards, side tables, jewellery boxes, lampshades, screens and trays by Madeline Bradbury and Carsten Harud. One of Carsten’s pieces is featured on this month’s front cover. It is a close up of a hand painted display cabinet that is for sale in the shop. You will also be able to see the artist’s work in the Café at the new premises of The Sussex Produce Company, No. 88 High Street.

Art House 50 is a family run business; the manager has come from an artistic and events organising background; the buyer and shop dresser previously worked for the shop at Charleston in Firle near Lewes.

Art House 50 Gallery will be opening for the Steyning May Festival, on Monday
30th May at 10am. Local artist, Christine Fletcher will be showcasing some of her contemporary mono-prints and oil paintings, inspired by her early years of working with horses and living in the Sussex landscape. One of her mono-prints ‘epona’ is featured above. Christine has a Fine Art Degree and is a qualified teacher. She now suffers from Alzheimer’s, but her art forms a major part of her therapy. Christine’s exhibition will be running from May 30th until 30th June. The Gallery space will be showcasing regular exhibitions throughout 2011.

The shops ethos is to support Sussex based artists and the majority of items for sale will be handmade unique pieces. It will be an Open House all year round, opening 7 days a week, Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm. Future plans are to use the Gallery as a spring board to run artistic workshops, classes and community projects.
