Are you up for the Challenge?

10:10 ...... Are you up for the Challenge? ......

New year, new green you!

Happy new year! This is traditionally the time that we already feeling somewhat less enthusiastic about all those ambitious resolutions we made at midnight on 1st January. All those good intentions to get fit, to eat better, to help others, to make a greater effort to see our friends, all start to get drowned out by the pace of modern life. But if you’re looking for fresh inspiration, or determined to hold out and make your resolution stick, why not gather your enthusiasm, be inspired and resolve to make this a greener new year by joining the 10:10 campaign!

What is 10:10?

10:10 is an ambitious project to unite every sector of British society behind one simple idea: that by working together we can achieve a 10% cut in the UK’s carbon emissions in 2010.

It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of a huge problem like climate change, but by uniting everyone around immediate, effective and achievable action, 10:10 enables us all to make a meaningful difference.

Why bother?

Cutting 10% in one year is a bold target, but for most of us it’s an achievable one, and is in line with what scientists say we need over the next 18 months. We now know for certain that unless we act quickly to reduce our use of dirty fossil fuels, humanity will face terrible problems in the years to come. Politicians have so far failed to do what needs to be done, so it’s time for ordinary people to step in and show that we’re ready to defend our children’s futures. It’s now or never for the climate.

This chart shows the average breakdown between different types of household energy use and shows the areas where you can make the most difference:

By taking simple actions such as walking or cycling shorter journeys instead of driving, holidaying nearer to home, swapping to low energy bulbs, washing clothes at 30 instead of 40 degrees, turning appliances off standby, recycling more, and turning down the thermostat, we can all easily reduce our individual contribution to climate change.

Join the national 10:10 campaign

By signing up to a 10% target we’re not just supporting 10:10 – we’re making it happen. In our homes, in our workplaces, our schools and our hospitals, our galleries and football clubs and universities, we’ll be backing each other up as we take the first steps on the road to becoming a zero-carbon society

10:10 is the perfect opportunity to discover what’s possible when we work together. Let’s get started! To sign up go to: http://www.1010uk.org/.

Support the Steyning 10:10 Campaign

Steyning 10:10 aims to make a start right here in Steyning. The idea is to get the whole community thinking about what we can do to cut our emissions. Then taking action so that together we can make a real difference. The campaign will run throughout 2010 and is aimed at everyone in Steyning, Bramber, Upper Beeding and the surrounding area.

Geoff Barnard organised a very successful event at the Steyning Centre on 2nd December to launch the Steyning 10:10 campaign. The event, which was very well supported, included a showing of the fantastic film ‘The Age of Stupid’, and lots of lively discussion after some lovely mulled cider.

We’re looking for volunteers to help steer and organise the campaign. We will hold a planning meeting in January to put together an Action Plan. This will include a schedule of activities and events over the next year to raise awareness, stir up discussion, and share practical information on what we can do to make a difference.
