An Evening with David Lyon, Hon Treasurer of the Royal Geographical Society

David Lyon, Honorary Treasurer of the Royal Geographical Society, will give an illustrated talk on Bhutan in aid of local health screening charity, the Mary How Trust.

Bhutan has been in the public eye recently, following the discovery of a ‘lost’ population of tigers living high in the Himalayas; captured on film in the BBC’s extraordinary documentary series “Lost Land of the Tiger”.

Join David Lyon for a fascinating talk on the mountains and people of this remote Himalayan Kingdom.

David will talk about the Lunana Trek – the 32-day trek along the northern Bhutan/Tibet border that is considered one of the hardest treks in the world.  It is attempted by fewer than 50 people a year – and less than half succeed.  He will also illustrate the customs, dress, and traditional dances of the rarely-visited Brokpa peoples of far eastern Bhutan.

In addition to enjoying David’s lavishly illustrated talk, there will be refreshments by So India restaurant of Stane Street, Pulborough; a licensed bar; and a display of textiles.

This remarkable event will take place on Tuesday 9 November at Pulborough Village Hall at 7pm.

Tickets cost £20 and can be purchased from the Mary How Trust’s ticket line (01798 877641) or via the website: www.maryhowtrust.org.

David Lyon has trekked widely in the Himalayas, Andes, Pyrenees and Sahara since retiring in 1995, including seven trips to Bhutan.  Since 2003 he has been the non-executive member of the Field Army Command Group, which is responsible for training those going to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.
