Amy Hatcher from Doodley Dogs answers some of our reader’s queries about their pets.
My dog has recently started to snap and run away from other dogs. He is 18 months old now and never shown any signs of this before:
It sounds like your dog lacks confidence around other dogs. It is easily fixed. Here at Doodley dogs our behaviourist Amy Hatcher is experienced in working with shy dogs. Your dog can spend the day here and be introduced to kind, gentle dogs who will help to build your dogs confidence and teach him how to interact with other dogs. Every dog has a positive experience here at the centre and every dog is treated as an individual. It is vital that you bring him along to socialise before the problem becomes worse.
My dog won't come back when I call him:
Recall can take a while to fix. The best way to start is in an open space with a squeaky toy and favourite food treat and lots of confidence. In the meantime bringing your dog along to Doodley dogs will allow him or her to burn some energy. They come home very content and relaxed!
My dog hates being left and does not like going into kennels:
This is a common problem and can often cause owners to not want to go away on holiday. Getting your dog used to being left is the way forward. As soon as your new puppy or new rescue arrives home practice leaving him or her so that it becomes a familiar part of your dogs routine. We often have dogs come to spend time with us at the centre. This really helps them get used to being away from their owner and being handled by other people. It is a sort of half way house to kennels as all the dogs are kept in groups in large rooms, fully supervised.
