What's Inside in February 2012

16. Khardung La - The world’s highest road pass

In the Indian Himalayas, Khardung La has its head in the clouds and its height in doubt. Is this really the world’s highest road pass? The sign at the top reads 18,380 feet but some say that refers to the old mule track higher up. Measurements abound, with different results, but those who make it to the top stand firm. Give or take a little, ignore dirt tracks in neighbouring countries, and this is the highest drivable road in the world. Turn to page 16 to find out more.

33. Puy Lentil, Chorizo and Chard Soup

There is a feeling of austerity about February as we approach the ‘hungry gap’ Last year’s crops coming to an end and the anticipation of the first green shoots of spring. If you have chard in your garden and planted ‘Bright Light’s’ or ‘Oriole’ then you will have colour as well as a tasty vegetable that will get you through the last of the winter months. No chard? Then use Tuscan kale or Savoy cabbage. Take a look at page 33 to read more.

60. Give Your Stuff Away Day

The first Sunday in March sees the return of an innovative, local and free solution to your “too much stuff” blues – and a chance for some free shopping, too!

70. Steyning Downland Scheme

Regular walkers round the Steyning Downland Scheme chalk stream and its ponds may have noticed some changes recently. In mid-November, when water levels were unusually low, some of the trees overhanging and invading this pond were felled by a group of keen volunteers.
This work followed rigorous review of options for future management of the pond undertaken over the past year by the SDS ‘Pond team’, mostly local people with interests in the beauty, wildlife, recreational value and history of these unique habitats. Turn to page 70 to read more.

We are a more than a month past the winter solstice and looking ahead to spring. The annual Steyning Stinger takes place on 4th March with athletes from all over the country taking part.
Women's World Day of Prayer will be on Friday 2nd March at 10.30am at the High Street Methodist Church. Strange hole in your garden! - see p4? or a suit of arms in the basement - see p5? Page 11 provides details of a proposed off shore wind farm to provide power for some 450.000 homes - read to find the date of the public exhibition for your area. The February issue has plenty of news, what's happening in and around the village and featured businesses - enjoy the read...
